The FATA is one of the most underdeveloped areas of Pakistan with 83% of its people illiterate and 60% living below the poverty line amidst rampant extremism. The tribal areas have been a major structural cause of instability in Pakistan. The tribesmen suffer from the impact of outdated laws that deny them the same democratic political system, fundamental human rights and economic opportunities prevailing in rest of Pakistan. The failure of the governance for the past 64 years has made the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) an administrative failure, an ungovernable entity, and a security problem. It has become a dangerous place not only for Pakistan but also for the others. Terrorists are taking advantage of the isolated status of the FATA and using the territory as a base for terrorism against the wishes of its inhabitants.
