Description
Salam Fayyad could survive as prime minister of a new Palestinian government to be agreed by Fatah and Hamas if the rival groups continue to show the flexibility that brought about their surprise unity deal, the Beirut-based influential daily AN NAHAR reported May 8. Azzam Ahmed, member of Fatah's central committee, said no agreement had been reached on the prime minister or the ministers, the newspaper said in a Ramallah-datelined report. But observers in Ramallah it did not identify said, "It would be incomprehensible to rule out Fayyad, an independent who paved the way for the declaration of a Palestinian state and the reconciliation." Fayyad "enjoys the confidence of international donors, alongside Palestinians who are not members of Fatah or Hamas," the sources told the newspaper's Ramallah correspondent, Mohammed Hawash. Palestinian sources told AN NAHAR Fayyad is still President Mahmoud Abbas' nominee for prime minister, but Abbas can support Fayyad to succeed him as president should Abbas decide to retire as he had hinted several times before. While Islamist Hamas has expressed opposition to Fayyad's leadership, at least one senior Hamas official, Ezaat Rishq, has been quoted as saying that the idea of him remaining prime minister in the new government would be studied.
